    Red Ear'd slider

Has anyone heard of anyone adding a red ear'd slider (turtle) to their aquarium? I have a 175 and think it would be pretty cool. I understand they have to have a place to get out of the water and a U.V light for the health of their shell, but other than that is there any problem with putting one...

    dither fish and south americans

I am setting up a 175gal S.A. Tank. I dont like the usual "nothing but display cichlids" look. I would like it to look more natural. In a lake or river you have smaller fish such as Tin Foil barbs, Danio's..that kind of thing. I know there is a risk that the S.A.'s will eat them, but to me thats...

    Blood Parrots

I recently switched my salt 175gal to a freshwater. I'm going to be going with unusual South American Cichilds. I've been keeping my eyes open around town and finally picked up my first two fish...Blood parrots. They were added about a week a part. I got a great deal on one about the size of a...

    Doing it backwards..part two

In part one (in the plant forum), I mentioned that I started with salt..did that for 15 years and recently switched to fresh. Having been in salt, I want something a little more impressive than mollies and swords (no offense). I have done a lot of research on discus and believe I have settled...

    Doing it backwards!

Yeah, I'm doing it backwards. I was in saltwater for 15 years and now I'm going to switch to freshwater. Its a 175gal reef ready tank with a 40gal sump. I'll be doing a discus tank with ALOT of community fish. After 15 years, I'm by no means a newbie to the hobby, but...I have little to no...

    Saltwater to freshwater tank conversion...

I know...I know..I'm doing it backwards. I have been in saltwater for about 13 years and to be honest, I have gotten bored with it. Its the same fish...the same coral...nothing new. So, I'm thinking I want to convert my 175 gallon bow front to a kick azz discus tank. This is what I currently...

    Garden hose

My wife and I realized that only thing we had done differently about the time of the crash was that we used a garden hose when doing the water change. We clipped the ends off and pumped the old water down the driveway. There wouldnt be anything on a rubber hose that would cause a crash, would it?

    Sand Sifters and a DSB

For the last several years I have been a big supporter of NOT including sand sifters in a tank with a DSB. Sand sHifters....yes, but not siFters. Well..my tank crashed again last week and we cant figure out why. Ran the gambit on the water test and all came back with in acceptable ranges...

    Back in the Saddle!

Hi everyone! Feels good to be back. Our tank crashed (due to the movers) about 7 months ago. Kim and I finally were in a position to get it back up and running. We did a 50gal water change and got a new clean up crew...As well as a few cool new fish. Now..my question. I know that last year...

Ever wonder why we dont use tap water.

I finally got my RO Unit installed a day or so ago. It came with a TDS meter. I checked the RO water...It read 20ppm...but I wasnt really sure how good that was. So I checked the water coming out of the fridge...734! I got busy and didnt get to check the tap. So anyone who questions why we...

    The photo's have arrived!

The only thing I will say is to please remember its a work in progress. The area around the pond will be stocked full..and I mean full of large lush vegitation. The hose running up the falls is because my pump has a crack in the housing and wont create any suction...so thats only temporary...

    Filter question

First...a small amount of background. In a saltwater tank you can run what is called a Berlin system. Short version is that you depend on water circulation to keep the dead spots in check and the bacteria to break down the ammonia and nitrites. Why can we not do the same with a pond. The LFS...

    Top ten...

Can we start a top ten list that is published on the board monthly? I think that would be a lot of fun. The Mod's pic a subject like "The top 10 things you dont want to hear your spouse say about the tank." Or The top ten things that you hear at your LFS that annoy you. Then the members email...

This is gonna be so cool!

I am talking to a local glass artist about doing this for my formal living room. It would sit on my coffee table. I want it to be about 2 foot long and the head would be about the size of a cantaloupe. Im thinking dark blue or purple. What do ya'll think.

    Waterfall foam!

I just wanted to update everyone on this stuff. I ended up using 4 cans on my falls (pics coming tomorrow hopefully.) Its very effective. It does exactly what the can says it will. Spray the "goo" between the rocks..it swells up immediately and drys with in minutes. 24 hours is almost rock...

New addition and a few questions.

I was at the LFS today getting water (still havent hooked up the RO machine  )...They had some red star fish there that I had never seen before. And as long as I have been doing this..thats saying a lot. So..being the responsible reefer, I called my wife at work and had her run a search...

    Pod depletion

I was wondering if anyone has an idea of how severe the depletion of my pods would be by a pair of Mandarine Gobies. I have 450lbs (or 500lbs..can remember which at the moment)..anyway..450 pounds of LR in my tank. 3-4 inch sand bed. It has been about a year or so since I took out the Orange...

A good starting point for begginers who want pond plants!

I thought, since I am doing so much research on my pond anyway, that I might put together a small article on the importance of plants in a pond. I may have gotten a little carried away. Here goes… The first question that we may need to answer is “Do I have to have plants in my pond.” The...

R/O unit...help on hooking it up.

I recently purchased a R/O unit. I have the filter put together, and ready to hook into the pipes. My question(s) generally relate to the plumbing. 1. Do I have to use the piercing tool or is there a way to hook it up with out putting it under my kitchen sink. I would like to put it in the...

    A hose question

Is there any problem with hooking a garden hose to my pump and pumping the new water from the mixing trashcan into the tank. I seem to remember someone saying that there was a problem with that, but I cant remember what it may have been.

    First pond pics!

Well..the pond isnt anywhere near finished, but I thought I would let everyone see what I have been working on. The first pic was taken about a week or so ago and doesnt have all the rock on the falls, but it lets you see the over all pond. For reference on the lenght, look at the fense. Each...

    Hooking up the R/O unit.

We just purchased an R/O unit. The instructions say that it is suppose to be hooked up under the sink. The clamp has a pin that is suppose to puncture the pipe. Is there a way to hook it up in the laundry room? I dont really want to put it under the sink, and our pipes are the mesh kind..not...
