Couple questions from a new member

well considering your ammonia is at 4 (at the time of testing.. it's probably worse now), you should do a water change. i'd say about 25-30% for a couple days in a row. You'll want to get the other test kits though and test before each water change.. your tank will be cycled and ready for...

Couple questions from a new member

Actually, I think you need a nitrIte kit more than a nitrate kit. Nitrite is the more deadly of the two. Nitrite is the second stage in the cycling process vs nitrate being the third.. As for your test kits, I think those are ok since they use chemicals to test the water vs a piece of litmus...

    I got baby fish!!

Oh, yeah.. the baby fish! lol They seem to be doing well, I've got the hang of feeding them with the syringe. A mix of crushed flakes and some liquid fry food mixed with tank water, then I slowly squirt the whole mix in the general area of the fry. I see them eating and they are getting...

Couple questions from a new member

Hi Solie! Welcome to AA! I'm a relative newb too.. I think you should get the test kits for Nitrite and Nitrate as well. If those get too high, that could kill your fish too. As for your water, if you think that it might be too harsh for your fish, you could call the water company and find...

    I got baby fish!!

lol umm, a hot korean eh? MTV? Why, you must be Jaime then. Careful as I'm sure I'm not the only one that knows who you are. I'd love to meet for drinks, ah, but I'm broke and my car is less than worthy to transport a hot babe like yourself. I do have access to a Mazda 6 though. Sometimes...

    I got baby fish!!

hmm, i wonder what they could have been then (the egg packs). I was thinking that they were egg packs that were dislodged by either the otos, or the female while she was defending her home against the otos (apparently, otos really like the liquid food i give to the fry) based on what you said...

    I got baby fish!!

umm, ok, need more help. The fry are all doing well. I can't tell if they are any bigger, but atleast it looks like most of em are there. I have noticed though some egg 'packs' floating around. I only assume that they are eggs because they kind look like tiny little cotton balls floating...

    I got baby fish!!

Hmm, I'll go buy some sponge later today.. i've been meaning to do that anyway to reduce the current strength coming out of my filter.. as for where I got my apistos, I bought them from a lfs, Modern Pets in downtown Honolulu. From what the guy told me, there's only one guy on the island...

    I got baby fish!!

So I was doing my weekly water change today. moved some plants, cleaned some gravel.. basically everyday stuff.. After the water change, I noticed some tiny specs, floating around.. not a big deal really because I moved all the rocks around, junk should be floating eh? but wait, did that spec...

    Plant trimming tool?

I purchased myself a high end, stainless steel hair cutting scissors. I figure that will more than suffice and its super sharp. But now, I'm stuck because I don't know how to trim certain plants.. is there a website or something where that kind of info is available?

ACK! MIA fish is back, but emaciated! What to do?!?!

Hi shawmutt I'm working on a similar angle for my own tank. using pvc tubing for safer and easier to clean caves. theres a thread in teh diy forum that gave me some good ideas, i can't find the link atm but i'll look harder later and edit. you might want to scan for that if you haven't seen...

How can I lower my pH the natural way?

Hey everyone.. so I finally have my tank cycled, I'm about a week away from introducing new fish - otos (they are in QT), and I have a nice group of plants doing the plant thing in my tank. My ammonia, nitrites and nitrates are all at proper levels and I've done water changes when they are...

I think I made some newbie mistakes..

Otos huh? *goes and surfs google* Hey, those look pretty cool! Sounds like they might be popular enough to be scarce.. I hope I find some.. How's 3-4 sound? by the time they get too big.. i can transplant them to my new tan.. wait.. *sigh* so thats what MTS is eh? Would it be ok to take one...

How to help lower Nitrates and Brown Algae

What kind of bulb are you using? is your tank in sunlight part of the day? I'm new at this, but I did switch my stock bulb to something a little beefier and that's when the algae showed up in my tank.. my plants are greener too so it's kind of a necessary evil. I've cut back on the time I...

    Possible Power Outage Solution

OIC.. :( Well, if one were to DIY a car battery setup, I think an appropriate container and vent system could also be arranged and I think it would still be cheaper and last longer than a UPS.. and you wouldn't have to deal with the *beep beep* of the UPS when it detects a power outtage...

I think I made some newbie mistakes..

on a side note, I think my tank is cycled.. YAY!! Here are my readings today after a water change (about an hour after) pH: 8 Ammonia: 0 mg/l Nitrite: <.3mg/l Nitrate: 12.5 - 25 mg/l (low) I'm using the Tetra color coded tests so the numbers might be a tiny bit off (like for Nitrates, the...

I think I made some newbie mistakes..

Umm, that's a big fish! lol OK, perhaps the sailfin is a bad idea.. I'm just really anxious to get another fish and i really think my tank would benefit from a pleco or other 'housekeeping' fish.. now i see some black fuzzy on my driftwood and i know the pleco would clean that up right away...

Sheesh! Get a room! said EEk to his fish

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna go with a slate based idea.. it will make a nice contrast to the huge driftwood on the opposite side of the tank. i might even design it in a way to help difuse the strong current under the filter.. we'll see though. gonna go to home depot later today..

    Possible Power Outage Solution

I'm no electrical engineer, but couldn't a rig be setup using a car battery? the idea of moving the tank to the suv got me thinking.. I can't imagine it being that difficult to rig a converter of some sort so you can 'plug' a heater into a car battery. I'll go ask my car stereo buddies to...

    Were losing Cookie this morning

Oh no! Cookie is the fish that you rescued from that pet store right? I read about him in your other thread "saw the most miserable fish". He's got moxie though, I certainly hope he pulls through.. Go Cookie Go!! On a side note, what could someone do if they were present during the power...

    Driftwood cloud.

I was wondering.. if you need to water log something and you have a big enough pot, couldn't you use a pressure cooker? would that work?

Sheesh! Get a room! said EEk to his fish

whoa, that cave does look good.. i've already got something in mind along with a piece of driftwood I have already in the tank.. gears are turning! I also have a slate based cave idea in mind, but how do I know if it's safe for the tank? pH levels and stuff? *edit* any thoughts on the cement...

I think I made some newbie mistakes..

Sorry, one more question and I promise to stop bugging everyone :) I have a penguin 330 biowheel filter. i think the current its making is too strong for my fish as they tend to stay on the far side of the tank. any ideas on how to reduce the current without changing the filter?
