    Mystery plant

Yeah it is Dracaena . It will last a while under water and sometimes even produces roots, but as stated already, it will rot eventually. It has been sold as an aquarium plant for many years, I sell quite a lot of it, so it is down to supply and demand :-)

    Goldfish; male or female vent?

Looks like a male to me in the bottom pic, but not really clear enough. Top and side views won't be conclusive. If you can get a better view of the vent with the pelvic fins out of the way, it would be easier.

    What is my fancy goldfish?

That is a calico fantail. The reason she looks lime a shubunkin ks that is exactly what she is, but the twin-tailed fancy variety. They are all the same species :-)

My fancy goldfish are dying off one by one

Fantails and other goldfish are quite capable of living at the temleratures you are recording. You only have to look at the temleratures in israel, for instance, where many are farmed. They are essentially warm water fish that tolerate low temperatures well. I suspect that they may have...

How to tell when your fish has passed

One surefire way to tell if a fish is no more is to hold it out of the water and check the eyes. A live fish will always look down with at least one eye (always both eyes in a healthy fish). A dead fish's eyes will remain central and stare out. Sorry you lost your fish. It is a shame betta are...

What in the world is this?

Haha, it looked like aa kuhli lying against some plant debris to me. I see the legs now, lol. Yeah, centipede

    A self cleaning filter

Does that not depend on what plants you use? Plants use calcium, magnesium etc for general cell growth do they not? Surely this would mean a lowering of the Kh in the long term if no water changes were made? I understood that some plants are particularly greedy when it comes to calcium and often...

Weird film on top of water?

IMO it may be the remains of an algal -off. If you have had any brown algae (diatoms) in your water, it may be that. As I see you have live plants, it could also be the beginnings of the growth of duckweed. Believe it or not, duckweed is a flowering plant, although it mostly multiplies by...

    Make or female platy?

The picture doesn't show any black that suggests a gravid spot as far as I can see. Also, all the fins are clamped, so it is hard to be certain if the anal fin has developed or is developing into a gonopodium. The size of the belly may not be conclusive as well fed males.can be quite bulbous...

    Plant ID

Looks like maybe a Cryptocoryne species. That dark colouring is the leaves rotting!

    Fish id please

They are a type of killifish called 'panchax'. sorry elephantnose, but they are egg layers. I wonder if you are perhaps confusing them with halfbeaks - a similarly shaped fish??

    Filter question?

You can use whatever you like - just ensure you have maximum surface area for the development of nitrifying bacteria
  21. P

What is the best filter you've ever used?

If I kept fish at home I would still be using an under-gravel filter - what could be simpler? Massive surface area for bacteria to colonise, no big pipes or other stuff hanging out of the tank, no leaks, no wrestling to get canisters apart or priming pumps, no washing sponges or replacing...

    Help plz! What is this?

Long thin body? Definitely not daphnia then. Probably some kind of insect larvae - I think the 'legs' will be the nymphs gills. Will most likely be a mayfly nymph or damselfly larvae. Google both and see if any look like your little water monster. Not a problem, although they would eat fish...

    Boraras micros feeding?

Sorry, I misunderstood :-) We started getting odd ones of these guys in with B. maculatus. Our supplier lists a fish they call 'glass' dwarf rasbora, which also have a stripe. i will see what scientific name they list them as and compare, but I am fairly sure your fish is the one I suggest. As...
