With a tnk that size and those sorts of fish, I would definitely start looking into more of an "external" filtration method.. Something along the lines of a 80-100gallon sump. Large pond pumps will keep your flow at a desired rate..

That's what i do.. But mainly because i am in a position to be able to get lots of 10 fry very cheap.. Admittedly I do really enjoy raising them up into my evil minions and culling out the adults i don't want. The problem arises when i start adding new fish to the already established colonies.

I don't think you'll ever be able to create a "self-sufficient" eco system in form of the rift lakes. In such a small space the cichlids would consume critters at a rate far faster then they could ever produce.. Having said that though, what would be the harm in throwing some in their to stock...

Thanks Anne, Not entirely happy with the scaping. Might build up the rocks on one side and run a bed of vallis on the other.. Also decided I might not use that piece of driftwood. Doesn't quiet fit in with what i'm going for.

Getting there... Might paint the back black again this weekend.. Hopefully picking up two large pots full of vallis tonight for a bit of greenery.. Friend of mine also has a heap more limestone for me to put in there.. Here it is now.. Isn't it amazing, I have only been keeping cichlids...

First major water change and vac done, 2nd being done right now.. BTW, you didn't really see those fish in there.

The other fish will be extremely good at eating them :O I've always mainly kept groups of 4 minimum, but groups of 3 have worked fine also..

I'm such a tool, just overflowed my tank for the 2nd time ever.. What about you guys? Come on, i know we've all done it.. Glad my place is all tiles :)
