Adding sand to aquarium

Can I add sand to an established aquarium? The tank is bare right now and has some caves. There are some fish in the tank as well.

I added sand to mine after it was setup. Realized I needed more than I originally put in there. Do a %50 water change and put the sand in. Fill it back up and keep the filter off until the sand settles. Took about an hour for me and came out fine.

No problem. I asked the same question on here a few weeks ago. From what i was told and with my experience it doesn't bother the fish at all.
