I fast my betta every sunday and give him peas on saturday. Yesterday I cooked the pea for him and smashed it as well as I can, and put it in his tank. He swooped and started eating like his life depends on it. Then he put a huge piece in his mouth and realised it was too big for him to swallow. Of course he decided not to leave it and was coming to the surface to gulp some water , (perhaps to push it in ). I was really worried that he might choke or something as he was moving with the piece for some good 5 minutes. Then I decided to leave him by and return in 10 minutes. After I returned , the piece was still there and i got worried and was thinking of ways to help my little buddy out . Suddenly he ate the whole piece and seemed very proud of it. I looked at him as if saying "See little fellow, you learnt your lession , never bite something more than you can swallow." As soon as I was done saying that , he scooped at another big piece and was hanging to it for good 10 minutes !!!! .
Of course the fact that he had a new tank mate on friday , made him hang on to his food ?
Anyways note to self - Always crush the pea into the smallest possible size before feeding him
