building a convict tank

So I keep seeing advice from people to put eggcrate? In a cichlid tank?
We are thinking of using pea gravel. We found some really pretty stuff at Michaels but I don't know if it will be too big for the convict to enjoy digging and should I put something under it. Pictures or links would be mega helpful.

I wrote this late in the night so want to move it up in case it was missed.

I wouldn't worry about using eggcrate, some people use this when stacking rocks so the rocks are not sitting directly on the glass or if they topple hitting the glass. I've never used them in any of my larger tanks which held 300lbs plus of Texas holey rock sitting directly on the glass panes.
