cycling question

OK So I set up my tank...and I guess you can say the rock wasn't cured because it stunk (the guy I bought it from had it it stagnant saltwater) so there was defiantly die off..anyways..my ammonia is about
.5 right now..should I still add a shrimp PR will the die off substitute?
