There is something different here. I have used hundreds of pounds of RC and not seen the stuff you and others are reporting. 24 hours shouldn't be long enough for something biological to happen. Maybe there is clay in some batches, or the chelator is binding to something.

I mix and use my water within 24 hours. This brown stuff is noticeable immediately after mixing.

I mixed up about forty gallons last nite and so far (with fingers crossed ) no brown slime ,... We'll see what it looks like Monday when I do my pwc

I know for a fact that it's certain salts that produce this brown stuff, and not all of them do. I also would like to call this something else- not slime, but maybe soot, or dust.

I'm certainly not doubting you, I just haven't had it happen to me. I am wondering if this "precipitate" Is organic in nature, or something that is a mineral.

I have the same brown stuff in my mixing barrel. I use Instant Ocean and RO/DI. Does not happen until I add the salt and the longer it mixes, the more brown residue. I now clean out my barrel and equip after every batch. Hasn't caused any problems in tank that I know of. Although I used to have nitrate issues before I started cleaning barrel after every batch. But don't know if that had anything to do with it as I made several changes at the same time to correct the problem.

When I used the reef crystals my buildup was a beige/tan color. I would see it also as a film in top of the water and when I added it into my five gallon jugs it looked like dust floating all through it. After adding to the tank of course it would clear up. It wasn't because it was not mixed well. I mix my SW for a minimum of 24 hours and usually it will be constantly mixing for 3-5 days before use. I had to constantly clean my powerhead and the container I kept it in. That is why I switched to the Salinity. I have yet to see the film or suspended particles with the Salinity but the old container I was using still was cacked with the Reef Crystals residue. I just started mixing my SW in s new container about three weeks ago and so far no residue, film, or dustlike particles. It will be interesting to see if it forms or stays clean. At a minimum at least I don't get that SW that looks like dust is suspended in it.

Whatever may be said about the residue those corals only seem to care about the stuff actually IN and above the water.
