So after reading up and youtube as much as I can, I finally set mine up. It took a little more than an hour to see bubbles and another hour to see bubbles coming from the diffuser.
I'm using an air stone for now until my diffuser comes from amazon.
I'll explain my recipe and the making of the bottle system you can find on youtube. I just used a regulator valve to adjust the bubbles to one bubble per second.
This setup is for a 5 gallon planted shrimp tank with 7 hours of low - medium lighting. I just started this morning so I won't know for a couple of days how well it will work.
Items:
1 2L clean bottle
1 1L bottle
1 check valve
1 in line regulator valve
3 feet of air line
1 hot glue stick
Recipe:
2 L of warm water
2 cups of sugar
half a teaspoon of the bakers yeast
half tablespoon of baking powder
1 tablespoon of tomato paste
1 teaspoon of lemon juice
Not neccesary but I added:
1 teaspoon water conditioner because we have hard water and this might help
1 teaspoon flourish comprehensive supplement. This is food for plant so might help the yeast do something
Steps
In a separate clean water bottle add the yeast and 4 tablespoons of sugar fill half with warm water and shake lightly for 30 seconds every 2 minutes for 10 minutes. This helps more of the yeast survive better.
In the 2L bottle add 2 cups of sugar 1L of warm water the baking powder the lemon juice and tomato paste and shake for one minute to dissolve everything.
Using a funnel add the contents of the water bottle and add it to the 2L bottle, then fill up the water bottle with warm water again and shake so you could take the remaining yeast residue and pour it in the 2L bottle.
Fill the 2L bottle with warm water until the top where the bottle starts to taper and shake for at least one minute.
Tighten the cap very tightly and wait about an hour or two...
In the last picture you can see small bubbles behind the sponge filter near all the tubing
