I'm just guessing. The fish is going to do what it's going to do whether it has a lot of food or a little. There was a short debate a while ago on this site about fast and slow metabolisms in fish. I would like to see links to any studies that have data on this, but haven't found anything yet, except hearsay.

That would be interesting info to come by, if you do I would like to read it. I always went by the 5 minute rule. If your fish can finish the food in five minutes then you are good. I would feed once very two days and they wouldn't even touch it. I tried everything and they only would nip at small mysis. I was worried so I watched them one day, and they literally just went from rock to rock very couple of minutes and ate pods all day. Almost like a dragonet. Pretty cool considering they are a goby.

Doug,

I just want to say that the tank looks awesome! I just went through all 91 pages to see the process unfold and I must say that this is amazing! Looks real good. It is an inspiration to myself and I'm sure others to see what can be achieved with a little bit of hard work and determination. Looks real real good. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks!
5 minute rule? That sounds like a lot of food.

Not trying to steal your thread, you really do have an amazing tank! Even showed my wife how you have the room and everything and she loved it and the idea of not seeing any filtration.

On that note, when my aquarist friend was talking to me about feeding habits and algae outbreaks, he mentioned a few things that you want to make sure of. One of which was that all food was being consumed in a short time. That I wasn't over feeding. All food in the tank should be consumed within 5 minutes. If its not, or the fish are kinda just playing with it and not scarfing it down, then you are probably over feeding.

Actually, everything you put in the tank, consumed or not, will have to be removed by whatever means you remove it with. Just because the food is eaten doesn't mean you aren't overfeeding. I bet about 80% of the people that frequent this site overfeed. The food i put in the tank is consumed in about 20-30 seconds, and I could feed less.

I agree that most people do over feed their tanks. I had a problem with algae, and diatoms a while back. My buddy came over to help me out and that was just one of my issues. I was way over feeding. My pico sometimes takes longer for food to disappear and that is more accurate for the 5 minute rule. I agree with larger tanks, food is gone in 30 seconds.

this. mine is even less i feed daily about 10-15 new life spectrum pellets. between my two fish and inverts they are done in a mapper of 10 seconds, and are extremely active and healthy

Nothing much to update as far as the tank goes. I have been busy with my kitchen upgrade finally....

It went from this mess....

Looks great. Love the choice of cabinet finish.

Super job on the kitchen Doug ,...had to laugh because it reminds me of my mess right now,...in order to get a beer one must first try to navigate thru some 2x4's ,a few assorted power tools a couple of buckets of parts and pieces of something or another, but if you do manage to find the refrigerator without breaking your leg the beer is ice cold.
Great job!!!

Just some new pictures of corals. Most of them are under straight blue and white Taotronics fixtures-
