My tank is up to about 80 degrees (I like keeping it at 78).

I'm debating purchasing a "purpose built" aquarium fan for cooling, or to just use some DIY solution (small desk fan, etc).

Tank is 40 gallons, 20 gallon sump. I'd be mounting the fan on/near the sump so the DT stays "clean".

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance...

I use and see a lot of folks using computer fans . Can run off an old 12v wall wart and small .

No difference . You have to look at your situation and figure the best way to do it .

I found this DIY chiller in the picture archive that really gave me a idea of making one.
this member had a idea that can work for all of us job well done,
I think the only thing I would do different is use a block of ice made from a milk jug with a hole drilled through it so the water hose can run through it.
instead of a ice pack just resting on the hose .

this really utilizes the cooler the fish are shipped in (y)
always wondered what I'd do with all them coolers besides for storing stuff
in .

80 isn't bad at all. Using fans on sump is going to cause more evaporation. If tank isn't going above 80-82. I wouldn't worry about it. " if it ain't broke don't fix it"
