If it's the type of cartridge I'm thinking of ... A few times I have torn the floss off the old one and rubber banded it to the new. If there was a question of space.
Would cutting a square of sponge or floss work? I'm finding the big pad of Marineland blue floss to be highly durable (no hint of falling apart after months of shaking and squeezing and rinsing). It's at Petsmart about $8 here. Another filter has things cut from sponge and floss pads for canisters, works well.
If you have a Petsmart nearby they're having big fish sales each weekend, then a bigger fish sale in January. I've been told to expect to see the Aquaclear/Fluval 50 on sale half price (so, about $25).
