need more tank info.

phosphate levels?
CO2 injection levels? (if you're adding CO2)
trace dosing routine?
Potassium dosing routine?

20 gallon tank
2 17 watt t8s
dont have a phosphate kit sorry
im at 5 kh of co2 and 7.6 ph
no dosing except for nitrogen toi get nitrates up

If im reading what you said right, your 5 degrees of KH and 7.6 PH comes out to about 4 ppm of CO2. Basically the same amount that is standard in any water left in the open. If you have a DIY CO2 or pressurized, check it.

As far as hair algae goes, its usually a very dark green color, not brown. about 2 -3 inches in length and i believe attributed to excess iron. If you see brown algae I would suspect a beard algae of some sort which is usually excess phosphates or bottom out nitrates. Can you test those two?
