It is infact a genus of cichlid. They are never recommended for first timers because of how hard they are to keep water quality wise etc. They also can be very picky eaters.

How big is your tank? I wouldnt recommend them at all for a first timer.

The tank is 55 gallons but I already put
1,600.00 into my first tank ... I wanted
It to look great and the discus look like
Colorful fish that are not aggressive

I wanted to get African cichlids but my
Brother had 6 and some bully others
Kick up sand, always fighting and
Stressing each other out...

Sounded more if a pain then what I read about
Discus ....

Yes 55 gallon first tank

I wouldn't get them as a first timer. The reason your brothers were always fighting is because he only had 6. Not enough. Don't take this the wrong way, but your brother has been giving you a lot of questionable advice about your tank. Glad you're coming here though! :)

Just start with some easier fresh water fish. Gouramis are nice, tetras, some easier dwarf cichlids, umm maybe some loaches. These are not specifics so maybe someone else can give you some better ideas.

Yellow labs are a common cichlid that you could find just about anywhere. They're colorful also. At this point I'm not sure what you're looking at though. Are you going for a community or cichlid tank?

Well... Maybe ill do a African cichlids tank..
I made a great tank. Wanted some beautiful
Fish to go in it

If you want colorful non aggressive look into rainbow fish especially bosemoni rainbows. Beautiful colors and non aggressive.

Discus are for advanced aquarists. I have been doing this along time and I am not willing to try it.

You can do cichlids as a first timer you don't need to just do boring community fish.

I would do mbunas if you go African they are very colorful and amazing I would get 14 or so and a Featherfin catfish. What type of substrate are you using and what type of decorations? Make sure to have some rock work and caves for African cichlids.
