Is SW more difficult than FW or simply more expensive?

Yes, but "somewhat planted" is a lot different than high-light, high-tech planted. It may not involve the purchase of LR, but in many cases, the cost of lighting is really comparable, plus many folks go the pressurized CO2 route, which can really set you back as well. Add in the expense of ferts that some of these tanks need on a daily basis, and I'm sure it can tack on quite a bit to the cost, little by little. As far as the maintenance involved, I don't think a FOWLR can quite compare to the amount of effort necessary for a successful high-tech planted tank (vs. an "algae factory!"). Maintaining a successful reef system is clearly more complicated, in most cases, than a FOWLR, but I think a high-light planted setup can be just as much work as a reef, even. JMO
