My girlfriend works at the local pet store and somebody brought in a jewel cichlid they were keeping in a ten gallon apparently

I have a 30g cycled that I was wanting to put cichlids in but I read these can get rather big

Would the 30 be ok permanently? And if not would it be ok till I find someone to take him?

She says the Petsmart doesn't have the space to keep him so we don't know what to do

They top out at about 5". Is this a standard 30? 36" x 12" foot print and what else is in the tank.

It's 30x12x18 so it may actually be a 29 now that I think about it, and nothing else it is completely empty just finished cycling today

The 30 I think would be fine but the 29 I'm not too sure on. I am sure it would be better than the small tanks at the store though. Maybe wait for some one else to confirm .

I'm guessing his color is light because he is stressed

But I have never seen one of these before and they really are something else

It doesn't have the spots I thought they were supposed to have so you are probably right

Like I said it was left at the local Petsmart

I dont keep Africans but looks like a mbuna just not sure which one. It may color up once its in the tank for a while. He may be pale from the stress of being moved so much.

Maybe mog will swing by he seems to be an ace at this stuff

I was leaning more towards South Americans until this happened tonight so we will see if I'm able to keep it

Yes I know they are African

South Americans were just the plan until my girlfriend called me and told me she wasn't going to let this fish stay in a bucket overnight

Sorry if I worded that wrong

Got it. The other thing that tells me its not a jewel is it looks like it has egg spots on the anal fin wich tells me its a mouth brooder. Jewels arent.

Ok thanks

By mouth brooder do you mean they spawn in their mouths?

The female will carry the eggs in her mouth till they hatch. The egg spot is to make the female try to grab the egg spots and the male will fertilize the eggs while she is carring them.

Kind of looks like a pseudotropheous elongatus to me from pictures?
