6 weeks ago I bought a 29 gallon kit at Walmart, I set it up got 6 tigerbarbs, 1 small Oscar and 2 African ciclids, (I had no clue about cycling) Everything was fine, 1 month into it I noticed the water getting cloudy, then it cleared up the next day, so I can assume it had cycled.
My girlfriend fell in love with 2 Blood Parrot Ciclids and brought them home to suprise me and as a gift , Everything was fine, she kept bringing me new fish every other day lol including 6 new small African Ciclids, I realized we may have been over crowding so I went and bought another 29 Gal tank. I started the tank fresh and placed the 6 Tiger Barbs, 3 Angel fish, 1 eel (dragon type), and 1 small Plecostomus. Plus like an idiot I also placed 25 small feeder goldfish in the tank to get them out of my vase ( I know I am a newbie , live and learn)
Here was the problem within 2 day's all the fish started dying one by one,
except one hardy Angel Fish. Anyway started to read up on this Forum and realized I may have ammonia poisoned the fish, I went to my LFS and got all liquid test kit , tested both tanks for Nitrite and it was off the chart on both tanks.
Realized I am probably over populated on both tanks, I cleaned my second tank out (the one with all the deaths it was Fishswitz) and decided to start fresh took some gravel from my seasoned tank. Placed the Small Oscar, The 2 parrot Ciclids, and the Angel Fish Fishswitz survivor in this tank. Everything fine so far its been a week, But Oscar just developed cloudy eyes,
My old established tank is high in Nitrites so I am wondering if it ever cycled and then I added to many new fish , I have been doing a 25% water change daily to keep down the nitrites is this preventing my tank from cycling again?
The Oscar tank is only a week old so I am sure it has NOT cycled and the nitrite is climbing
My first tank should haver been cycled but i may have screwed it up by adding more fish 2 fast.
So tank 1 now has 7 small African Ciclids, 1-3inch Plecostomus
Tank 1 , 6 weeks
PH 7.6
ammonia 0
Nitrite 3
Nitrate 5
Tank 2 now has 1 oscar, 2 Parrot Ciclids, 1 Angel fish , 2 small baby africans
PH 7.6
ammonia 0
Nitrite 3
Nitrate 5
All the fish seem healthy except for Oscars cloudy eyes
Can I do a 25% water change on each tank daily?
Do I clean the gravel? Or just skim poop off the top?
What can I do for Oscar?
I have MT Shasta water (there are 4 bottling companys in my area so the water is great) should I still use some kind of slime , clorine remover?
does doing the daily water changes and adding Aquasafe hinder the cycling process?
How come both tanks have the same parameters? tank 1 is going on 7 weeks , tank 2 is a week old
Can anybody tell by the parameters where i am at in the cycling process?
Is it safe to do daily water changes? How does it affect the cycling process?
Please any help or advice will be appreciated
Oh FYI Oscar will be moved to a 100 gallon tank in 6 months
And my girlfriend stopped buying fish ( Tank God)
Oh yeah one more thing Oscar loves gold fish he can eat 5 within 10 minutes , can I over feed him with goldfish? I assume as long as he eats them right away I am fine
oh yea one more thing I am only feeding once a day now and very sparingly
