Yes. Adding nutrients into the water column is a direct food source for algae. We always over feed with fuels and food marketed for coral and inverts. Normally always unnecessary.
 
I'm going to agree with sniper on this. If you want to feed phyto then I would suggest setting up a live culture. It's a simple task and you can't realistically overfeed with it.
 
Yes. They break down into algae food almost as it hits the water. Anyone feeding filter feeders has to have a good filtration system and be prepared for water exchanges.
