why would my ph rise did my weekly check this morning normally at 7.4 has gone up to 8.6 what would cause this:fish2:

Some types of rock and other ornaments inside the tank can raise the pH.

my ornaments have been in all the time ph has been steady only thing changed recently is that last week i introduced a co2 defuser which is plastic mmmm

I would ask this question in the fw 'planted tanks' forum because you will get a better response. I dont fully understand the process but there is something called 'biogenic decalcification' which relates to GH & KH and your co2 system and how your plants utilize everything and the end result is a big jump in ph. I believe it has something to do with specific plant species & their production of carbonate. Someone with more plant & co2 experience will be able to explain whats going on (im still learning!)!! Good luck!
