Stocking advice

I recently got my girlfriend into the hobby and now she wants a tank. We are in the planning phase now we plan to set up a 10 gallon tropical freshwater tank. I have a plan for the decorations and everything else with a few hidden surprises for her. The only thing I'm unsure of is what fish to put in it so I ask what fish do well in a 10 gallon tank? Any and all recommendations will be accepted thank you in advanced

For a starter tank, I would do the following-

5 male guppies or 2 male platies or 3 male guppies and one male platy
1 mystery snail(optional)
10-20 ghost shrimp
Be sure to cycle!
