Those really dont belong in a 40g. Some think bichir shouldnt be in a 40g. Im just trying to give me best advise without telling you you need a new tank.
Ya? I have never had one, just from what i have read. But the bigger and thicker the fish the more bioload, and 40g isnt very big so the bioload shouldnt be too high. Maybe a school of tiger barbs? They get nice size and work in semi-aggressive setups, and are very cool looking.
