I'll say this, generally if a person asks the question "can I mix old and new worlds?", they typically have not done enough research to pull it off properly. There are situations where it will work, but more often than not it requires research and experience, and if someone is asking that question, then they have not done enough research for a mix to work out in the long run. I still wouldn't really mix, just like I wouldn't mix the different rift lakes.
