I've had this Jewel for about a week and been researching like crazy and havens been able to figure out what it is!! If you could also give me it's sex?!?!

And I pretty sure he's not stress he has not been showing and signs of it! He did lose a friend the other day but I got a bumblebee catfish cause I herd they bond with cichlids! And I also put more rocks in there and he's accaully loving it!

I mean I've seen pics of them on google I just can't find out what the jewel is called and I need to know so I can find out where there from and do research on him so far I've just been feeding him pellets and freeze dried krill!! I need to get some frozen food soon!

I have one identical all except mine has red ascents on the fins

From my understanding there are two species of fish that are called "jewel cichlids"

Hemichromis bimaculatus: this is the jewel that you have they only turn red when in breeding condition.

Hemichromis lifalili: this is the other specie this fish is always red but turns blood red when in breeding condition.

There are many more than that, but those are the common two sorts that are sold.

Mine is very similar to yours and i researched for a while to i.d it. I think its the lifallili, by the fact that mine is quite easy going and smallish. It also seems to have the body shape of the lifallili.

Now, about the colour. Mine was exactly the same, kind of brick red most of the time and i have to say i was a bit disappointed. This was the case for about the first 3-4 months i owned him, but over the past couple of months he's redenned up and is a stunning fish now. He's stayed like that too, so i think that will be how he'll be all the time. So hang in there and give him a chance, you won't be disappointed if yours goes the same way. He's got slightly more bullish too, but still not too bad. He may have reached sexual maturity and thats the reason for it. I don't have any other Jewels in the tank by the way.

After about 4 day I finally got to see her eat so once she becomes more comfortable she may turn bricked like yours!
