He is just doing it old school. That is pretty much how we all did it back in the day. One of my first salt tanks was a 150 gallon that I pretty much cycles exactly like that. Sometimes people would cycle the tank using fresh water and goldfish then ditch the goldfish, add salt, and go from there.

Wow however that was written in 2004... Wow to how it has changed... yet I think that is a little old school for 2004 as well. I agree with Mel!! haha
