Cichlid tank canister filter cycle

Hello everyone,

First of all let me say THANK YOU to every body. Your advice and opinion has helped me grow as a aquarium keeper.

I'm going out to by me a canister filter this weekend and I'm pretty sure on which one I'm getting. I've been doing some reading on here and I wanted to know,
How would I go about cycling my new filter. To prevent ammonia spikes? amongst other things. And which filter medias are considered the best for cichlids?

You can run the new filter on your aquarium with your old filter so the old one can help seed the new one. Also about filter media, it's really preference. I run pre-filter, bio-bags, ceramic rings and filter floss In my fluvel 405. Also have some activated carbon pads on stand by just in case. Hope this helps!
