I currently have an Oscar and a discus in the same tank, and they have been together for a couple of months. Is it just luck that the discus is still alive, or will it work in the long run??

That definitly wont work in the long run.

Discus are too peaceful for the aggressive oscar, and need perfect water quality. That is tough to achieve with a poop machine like the oscar.

What he Said^^^^ An Oscar and Discus have no business in the same tank.

Luck. They should never be kept together. Glad you are planning on separating them. While you're at it, I would suggest adding a few more discus with the one you have. They tend to do better in groups rather than as single specimens.
