adjusting Air on a protein skimmer

HI
I got a small 10 gallon tank off someone that came with a protein skimmer.
Skimmer has a hose which allows me to adjust air going inside the skimmer.
Whats the proper way of adjusting, so far I had it completely air tight, is that the correct action? should I add air?
more air more skimming?

What kind of skimmer? More air will be a dryer skim, which will yield a foamier white mass of bubbles at the top of the neck before it spills into the collection cup...

There are skimmers that you can adjust both the water intake and the air intake. You first start with fully open water and fully closed air. You then slowly open air to produce the finest bubbles and fine tune by readjusting to close a little bit. If your flow is too much where bubbles are large and overflowing the cup too fast gradually reduce water intake until you get the right setting.
