We wondering if I bought bio beads or balls from a fish store and aqua filter from a wal mart and mixed them both in the back of the filter if that would work out

Sure will, I would get some floss or pads too. You can also buy a box of womans panty hose and fill it with carbon then tie it off and cut the rest off. Then save that piece and tie the one end then fill it. you can do that over and over. I never use the filter stuff that goes with filters in stores. The more you can pack in filters the more BB it will build
