What are the Benefits of Deionization?

I'm pretty clueless as to what Deionization really is. Can anyone help me on this one? What equipment (if any) do you need? I've got an RO already, but just curious about Deionization.

Deionization uses resins to remove dissolved solids from the water by ion exchange.
