Something I opted to do as well: float the shrimp in a plastic bag with holes in near your filter output, or keep it in some kind of object (like a plantpot) you can readily remove. Trust me, just dropping a prawn in and then having to get it out afterwards mostly decayed is not the most pleasant of tasks!
If you can get hold of some pure ammonia then that would be a quicker way of cycling. You then don't have to wait for the shrimp to decay and start procuding ammonia where as you instantly have ammonia if you use....... ammonia lol
