I read somewhere that you can cycle a tank with raw uncooked shrimp; how is this done?

Read this article. Fishless Cycling. It can be done with a raw shrimp as an ammonia source as well.

im in the process of a fishless cycle. make sure you take out the shrimp (if theres any left) between ammonia levels 4.0-8.0
otherwise you'll just be overdoing it with the ammonia, like me...

Something I opted to do as well: float the shrimp in a plastic bag with holes in near your filter output, or keep it in some kind of object (like a plantpot) you can readily remove. Trust me, just dropping a prawn in and then having to get it out afterwards mostly decayed is not the most pleasant of tasks!

If you can get hold of some pure ammonia then that would be a quicker way of cycling. You then don't have to wait for the shrimp to decay and start procuding ammonia where as you instantly have ammonia if you use....... ammonia lol
