So I've seen a few posters talking about egg crates under their rocks. What gives? What am I missing? Will it help with stability of the rocks or something?

Generally fish like to dig around the rocks sometimes even underneath causing loose sand or gravel underneath which could lead to a collapse of the rocks down the road the egg crates help prevent the fish from digging while adding stability if it ever does happen meaning it will be a lot less likely your rocks will collapse if you have the egg crates under the substrate

well put, especially with fish like cichlids who can be major diggers and rock movers, rocks that fall down into loose sand can scratch up the bottom of the tank or worse
