How do you know what kind of algae grows on your tank?

Through research and reading. If I don't know what kind it is, I research it on the web and ask around here.

Well, the simple answer for me is they all have grown in my aquarium at one time or another save, BGA thank goodness. Just kidding. Just keep researching here, the krib, plant geek, chuck gadd's website etc.

Plant geek has a nice section on different types of algae. As you experience them, you will learn what they are, though I sure wish I didn't know about as many as I do, LOL!
