I changed my water today and I noticed a large number of tiny little black "things" swimming around in the bowl I put the filter insert from my AC HOB in. They swim very quickly and "appear" to be round. I would say there are close to 100 in about a 1/4 cup of water. A few of them have appeared to possibly have a small tail although a majority of them do not.

Edit: Well it turns out that the little critters are copopods. They are elongated a little and have little "fan" like appendages that they extend to catch food. There also turned to be nematodes and some are really long from what I understand about them. Also some really small clear things, and some other really fast microscopic things.

Hopefully it is a sign that the tank is healthy with all of this micro-organisms thriving in my filter media and probably in my tank.
