mixed substrate question

I have gravel right now, but I was wondering if I can mix sand or another substract for plants in to the gravel? Also how long should I wait for it to settle before I put the fish back in?

Any substrate you add that has smaller grains than your gravel will just fall through the gravel and end up on the bottom. If you don't want the gravel then I suggest changing it out to whatever you want.

I have gravel under a decor I top of sand to make it show better

I used play sand and rinsed il it looked clear and it only took a few hours to settle
