I've just had to split my pair of pearl gouramis. The male just kept pestering and nipping the female and it was starting to affect her condition. Anyone had experience of that.?

yes!
If your male pearl gourami has reached breeding age, he may chase and annoy the female - regardless of whether or not she is ready to breed.
Unless your tank is big eough with lots of places to retreat and escape, its best to separate them.
The aggression may stress, exhaust and injure your female gourami.

Yes he's very red chested but don't think she's ready. Il keep them apart for a while. They are both a couple of inches so she can't be far away!!
