Just got a new 56 gallon tank.

Wondering if it would be beneficial to add a powerhead and where to place it.

It's a 56 column tank.

Stock will be...

3 Boesemani Rainbows
3 Rosie Barbs
1 Gourami
1 Bamboo Shrimp

I have an aqua clear filter that does 300 gallons an hour.

Thanks!

I think it depends on what kind of flow the filter provides. HOBs tend to spread out the flow compared to canisters which may lessen the current on the fish. With a tank that size I'd prolly say yes to the power head. I'd place it on the opposite side of the tank from the filter. As for direction, this may take some trial and error to achieve an ideal flow pattern (eliminate dead spots in the tank if possible) yet not place a stress on the fish.

I run a lot more flow in a smaller tank than yours (2x 200 gph in 20g). It is moderate to heavily planted and the outflow is situated in such a manner that does not disturb the plants or fish (angled 45 degrees downward with no splash).
