Has anyone used the Hagen Peat Plates under their substrate to soften and acidify the water? I'm interested in using them for several of my tanks as a permanent solution as opposed to treating the water every week.

I've never used them - my water barely registers on the hardness test.

My only concern would be their placement under the substrate. Wouldn't that make gravel vacs more difficult and would the plates cause problems similar to those caused by UGFs? I've seen peat pads that can be cut to fit in just about any filter.

Just curious - what is your pH and hardness readings?
