So this has been going for a while now. I potted some plants for one of the containers, the others just have floaters. This one only has some tadpoles and a few rcs for now

Maybe. It was just a few rcs culls so I've no idea if they'll last. I don't think keeping shrimp in this system is going to be possible without sealing off a container for them. In the containers that I have that don't have tadpoles in them there are dragonfly larvae, so I don't know how it would work otherwise.

My eventual plan is to catch and put some ghost shrimp in there.

I thought maybe they were really special tadpoles to get a snack like that :)

I think the tadpoles are keeping the dragonfly larvae in check, haven't seen any in there yet. Haven't seen tadpoles and dragonfly larvae in the same container together. I see tons of dragonflies out there every day though, as well as lots of frogs that kinda just hang out.

The one thing I really like about the tadpoles is they are actively knocking down the algae as it grows.

You just need to keep the flow up. What about a shade cloth kinda set up? You can do a makeshift thing. Even just laying the cloth over a few bricks above the edges.

When I had my little Koi pond in a plastic liner I had to use an extra filter pump to aerate during the summer. I got the green algae on the sides/edges where the sun hit all the time but it kicked the Hair Algae problem. But isn't it almost always summer where you are?

Well I'm kinda torn because I want the plants to get plenty of light, since this is primarily for plants rather than fish.

So far the algae has been manageable, but I think painting the sides of the containers may help reduce the algae somewhat since they won't be getting light in from the sides as well.

Along with the inline UV I've also hooked up a 20lb Co2 tank to the system. I put some pipes on the outflows of each container to minimize the splashing, so we'll see how that goes (it's only been a few days). I'm also dosing glutaraldehyde.

It actually does get kinda cold here in the winter. Last year it was below freezing for 2-3 days which is really rare. We usually have about 2 months of weather that dips down into the 40s or so with 60s in the daytime. Nothing like up north, but it's supposed to be Florida here.

Painting the sides of the containers will help a lot. Doesn't matter what color, although I'd recommend light colors to reduce heat gain. I don't think shade cloth will reduce algae growth, just help with plants that don't like full sunlight

Plants look amazing!! My pond is in full sun, it gets a little algea on the edges and green water if i shut down the system. Might be the comets or trapdoor snails keeping it in check or under control though. The snails dont seem to bother the plants in there, might be an option to look into.

Id love to add some other natives just havent got around to it. Every year I say next year I'm making it bigger and adding to it.

We also have have a large dog. 120 pound german shepard that chases anything that comes close to the house. I know a lot of people around me have issues with birds. My problem is keeping the dog out of it and destroying plants. Id hate to see your electric bill cause mine is high now
