Getting started..

I'm making a 40g fowlr setup, but that's not important here, I'm going to be getting my tank drilled soon and I want to know the best positions, I'm putting weir overflow in the middle back and it will be in the shape of a half cylinder. Where should I position the holes and should I put one 3/4 and 1/2? I don't know the best siZes for a 40g I'm going to be using a marineland 1200 whatever powerhead in my sump, also should my sump be a 5.5 or 10, I could even get a 20long. Any website recommendations?
