A few more questions:

When buying live rock, is there a certain percentage that can be base rock vs reef rock? Can all of it be base rock if you are trying to save money?

When buying LED lights, what can you use to mount them on your tank like T5 lights can with legs?

Thanks!

Not sure with led question sorry but all the rock can be base yes

yes it can be all base rock but it will take longer to cycle because the base rock has to be made into live rock.As for the LED lights, there are lights that sit on your lid.Like this one:

you can hang them from the ceiling or a wall mounted brace, buy leg brackets to sit on your tank (most companies have these available) or.... you can build your own mounting brackets:)

Thanks for the replies. I thought that base rock was "live", but it didn't have the diversity of life of the more premium rock. Of the 1-2 pounds/gallon rule is there a certain percentage that is typically to be base rock vs premium rock? Or is that 1-2 pounds per gallon of premium rock PLUS also some more base rock? Thanks!

You can have 80% base or even 100%. It will all eventually become live.

Depends on if you have any live rock, i sould get about 5-10lbs of live rock and then get your base rock so that the organisms or whatever is on there can spread to your base rock and turn it live even sooner. If you get the live rock and go that route than id say 3-4 weeks for your base to become live
