Do female betas do better in groups or singularly in a 55g community tank?

You can keep them either way. Personally with all that room I would do a group of female bettas in there, probably seven or eight if they're the only fish in there, when you get them in there they will establish a hierarchy.

Have female Betta's and male guppies together with no issues.
