How often should I clean the canister filter? We have a Fluval 306 in a 60gal tank. Also, any suggestions on the best media setup? Thanks for the advice in advance!

If you can run two filters you get more media / cleaning options.
I run an internal small filter with just sponge (maybe carbon or something else) that gets cleaned say once every 3 weeks.
Then 2 canister filters (on 150gal) that gets cleaned less often. Mostly when I get long weekends.
With several filters you can rotate cleaning and doesn't matter so much if one goes down / gets a good clean.

I rinse out my canister and media monthly with tank water from a PWC.
