I have a 55g working on setting it up right now it's just the tank and a 10g filter with 3 inches of water. No fish or sand. My neighbor is redoing their house and they have an old vanity that looks to be about the right size. Looks in good condition think it'll be able to hold the 55 on its own or should I add supports to it(assuming I can get it)

It could probably take the weight. But there is no point risking it I would add supports anyway. Minimises the chance of you getting home and seeing your beloved tank scattered all over the floor.

I agree. Some snug studs on the inside should do the trick as well as members going across the inside against the top.
