I know this sounds like a crazy question, but I'm wondering about using silica sand, which is sold as crystal cat litter as a substrate for plants. It is promoted for its advertised ability to absorb the nutrients (in this case, from cat #1 and #2). I know it will have to be washsd of chemicals (fragrances, absorbed nutrients, etc), but once clean, I'm wondering how well it would work as a planted tank substrate. ...or would it be a diatom infestation just waiting to qo nuclear?

I think just buying silica sand from a pool store or home improvement store is a better idea. God knows what that might leach into your tank.
