I used one bag for my 10 gal and it turned out to be 2 inches deep.

Arrg...I got my 20 lb bag today, and it only filled my 10 gal about 1.25". I'll have to find some more locally, or I'll add some tahitian moon sand to get me up to 2" or so.

@ gfink: I would use some Tahitian Moon Sand on the top anyway. IMO it looks a whole lot better and will add to the height of your substrate. You don't need any fertilizer at the very top of the substrate anyway  .

yeah, but won't it all get mixed in anyway when you plant and move things around overtime?

I have a 70gal with about up to 4" pool filter sand at the bottom and about 2" of Black Tahitian Moon Sand at the top. You got to be a little careful, planting and pulling out plants, but it's not that bad. Works out fine for me  .

That's wierd, because mine filled up to 2".

Filling it up with some black tahitian moon sand is a great idea.
