I found a plant in my creek that l put in my tank and it's been growing very well for 3 months. It looks a little like ludwiggia. Has anyone experimented with local fauna instead of always running out and buying the tropicals? It seems to work better so far for me. I have both the local and the tropicals in the tank and can't discern any ill effects.

Can you suggest any good ones? If I posted pictures, I wonder if there are folks out there who could identify what I have.

As zezmo has said many aquarium plants are native to north america. Ludwigia repens, ludwigia palustris, and ludwigia glandulosa are some examples. Many are endangered though. You can find which are native plants in your area here http://plants.usda.gov/ .

i do not know about your state, but in minnesota it is illegal to collect aquatic plants with out a license :?

just check your local laws
