Surface film on 90 gallon

IMO not much light would be defused. To remove the film drag a paper towel across the top of the water longways while rolling it up. The film will stick to the towel.
 
It will cut down some light. The reason you get a protein film on the water surface is because there isn't enough surface agitation/movement. If you have a canister on the tank you can aim the outflow up towards the surface to aid in movement, if you have an HOB filter you can drop the water level just low enough so the water cascades into the tank like a water fall. Or is you have a canister you can usually find a surface skimmer attachment to use for the inflow.
