Water Change in Planted Tank Questions

The EI method suggests 50% water changes weekly. How do you guys do water changes without messing up the tank? My tank doesn't have any plants growing up past the halfway, but surely they fall all over each other during water changes, right?

shouldn't be a problem, they just layover and straighten up with the rising water

Sometimes you have to fluff them back up, but it is no big deal.
